We’re heading into Summer with anticipation of vacations, beach trips, camping or maybe traveling abroad. I personally like sitting on a beach with a cold drink in my hand! No matter if you are traveling this summer or having a “staycation”, it’s a good time to update your emergency contacts and I put together a quick list of travel tips that might be useful for you.

- Emergency Contact: Keep in your wallet your emergency contact. Check it every summer to make sure your contact is up to date including their new phone numbers, addresses, etc.
- Medications: On that same card, list out any Medications you are taking or Allergies you might have so that Emergency personnel can find it if you are unconscious.
- Travel Assistance: If you are covered under your Employer’s Group Coverage, do you know that most Life and Voluntary Life plans has a Travel assistance program? It a simple 1-800 # that you can call to help with a lost wallet, medical emergency, stolen passport or even a death of a family member. It’s worth keeping this number with you if you are traveling more than 100 miles from your home.
- Are you leaving your kids with Grandma while you travel? If yes, go online and complete a Power of Attorney for Medical Decisions. You can find free forms on the intranet and this document will allow the person taking care of your kids to make medical emergency decisions if your kids should be hurt and need immediate care and you are not able to be reached for a period of time.
- “Save Yourself” Emergency Bag: Fill up a Ziploc* bag full of travel size items such as headache/pain relief meds, sunscreen, antacids, Band-Aids*, etc. It may seem trivial, but in the middle of the night in a strange location, you’ll be happy you brought the basics.
